Hitchin

Hitchin is a medium-sized market town in Hertfordshire halfway between Cambridge and London (junction 8 of the A1).

The market takes place on Tuesdays and Saturdays amidst a mixture of buildings ancient and modern, it has to be said that the design of the modern buildings does not show much sympathy for the heritage around them. This of course will all be by the by when we are swallowed up by the neighbouring box-town conurbation that is Stevenage.

St Mary's Church in the town centre is a large parish church standing picturesquely by the River Hiz. Its interior is of an unusual design which apparently also blesses the parish church of Grantham in Lincolnshire, the former home town of my wife, Gill (who was a Carson in those days).
